Free time (creative exploration) - 5-7 mins
Allows the players to warm up, try new things, use their imagination and be creative.
This is not a time to fool around. If they do, they’ll lose this time.
Fundamentals - 20-30 mins
Skating, passing, shooting (players need to master these skills individually before getting more technical). Goalies have time to work on their skills.
Examples:
Warm-up: Full-ice flow drills with goalies (incorporating all 3 fundamental skills).
Groups/stations either skill-specific or position-specific (goalies on their own).
Use drills that have at least 2-3 players going at the same time. Maximize reps; minimize standing around.
Individual Play - 20-30 mins
Full-ice drills focusing on competition, puck battles, quick thinking, creativity, awareness.
Examples:
1v1, 2v1, 2v2
Defense practice angling, gap control, pressure etc.
Forwards practice stick handling, puck protection, driving the net, being an option etc.
Team Play - 10-15 mins
Full-ice drills focusing on endzone strategies.
Examples:
Breakouts - D to D, reverse; being an option
Forechecks - F1, 2, 3; cycling, being an option
Faceoff responsibilities in both zones
PP and PK responsibilities
Fun/competitive drills - Final 5-10 mins
Small area games focusing on conditioning, speed, creativity etc.
